He explained during a session of the Security Council, “More than half of Afghans face severe levels of hunger,” noting that “more than 80% of the population in Afghanistan depend on contaminated drinking water.”
He added that “education and social services in Afghanistan are on the verge of collapse,” while “more than half of Afghans are facing severe levels of hunger.”
Guterres called for “advancing the Afghan economy” and “allowing international finance to pay the salaries of Afghan public sector workers.”
He also urged the Taliban terrorist movement “to expand opportunities for its people and demonstrate a commitment to be part of the international community,” warning that “if we do not help the Afghans endure the storm, the region and the world will pay a heavy price.”
