Bahraini association welcomes the release of some prisoners of conscience and calls on the authorities to drop the death penalty
The Bahrain Press Association welcomed “the release of some political prisoners sentenced in Bahrain under the Alternative Penal Code,” and called on the authorities to drop the death penalty.
The Association said in tweets on Twitter, that it “encourages more positive initiatives, which would enhance the atmosphere of national reconciliation in the country in the midst of facing this pandemic, which represents a difficult test for all.”
The Association called on, “the authorities to speed up the release of more political prisoners, and to abolish the death penalty from the penal code.”
It stressed “the necessity of hastening the restoration of the nationality of all Bahraini journalists and political activists whose nationalities have been revoked in contravention of the law.”
The Bahrain Press Association concluded, “More positive initiatives and compensation for victims would establish a new phase in parallel with enhancing political freedoms and protecting freedom of opinion and expression, which should be guaranteed for all Bahrainis, including criticism of the government’s policies and commenting on its performance.”
