CPJ warns of growing threat to press freedom in Afghanistan

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has raised serious concerns over recent statements by officials from the Taliban’s Ministry of Information, warning they pose a “grave threat” to press freedom and free expression in Afghanistan. In a recent statement, CPJ criticized ongoing Taliban investigations into Afghan citizens’ use of social media, describing such actions as repressive and a violation of basic human rights.

The group condemned threats of legal action against what the Taliban called “illegal” social media use, saying these measures undermine independent media and restrict public discourse. The Afghan Journalists Protection Organization echoed these concerns, labeling the remarks a direct threat to journalists and calling for firm international intervention.

CPJ urged global human rights groups to act quickly to protect Afghan journalists and defend press freedom amid what it called a “critical moment” for the country. It also encouraged media workers to strengthen their digital security and seek legal and humanitarian support.
