Three dead, dozens rescued in Mediterranean crossing

At least three people, including two children aged 3 and 4, have died in a Mediterranean crossing from Libya to Italy, according to the German sea rescue charity RESQSHIP.

The victims were found on a rubber boat adrift south of Lampedusa, Italy, after being spotted by an EU Frontex surveillance plane. Survivors, including many with chemical burns, were rescued and brought to Lampedusa.

The boat, which departed from Libya on Wednesday, had been stranded after its engine failed. The central Mediterranean route remains one of the world’s deadliest for migrants.
