Majority of Americans say Trump policies have worsened economy, CNN poll finds

A growing majority of Americans believe that President Donald Trump’s economic policies are harming the country, according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS. The survey shows that 59% say Trump’s actions have worsened economic conditions, up from 51% in March and matching the lowest ratings seen during Joe Biden’s presidency.

Public dissatisfaction is evident across key economic indicators. Seventy-one percent of respondents describe the current economy as poor, with only 28% calling it good. Additionally, 69% believe a recession is at least somewhat likely within the next year.

Trump’s recent tariffs are particularly unpopular. A 55% majority views his tariff policy negatively, and 6 in 10 say it has already raised their cost of living. Only 12% feel his policies have reduced prices in their community.

Although most Republicans continue to support Trump, there is skepticism within the party. Just 63% believe his policies have improved the economy, and only 23% credit him with lowering living costs.

The survey, conducted April 17–24 among 1,678 adults, highlights widespread concern about inflation, rising expenses, and economic uncertainty, with many citing tariffs, job instability, and reduced investment returns as top worries.
