A demonstration against Austria’s ban on wearing the Islamic headscarf in schools for girls under the age of 14 was held in Vienna on 1 October 2026, with civil society groups and initiatives calling for the protection of religious freedom and democratic rights.

The protest began in front of the Austrian Parliament at around 5 p.m., with approximately 500 participants expected according to organisers and local reports. The demonstration was organized under the banner “Nein zum Kopftuchverbot” (No to the Headscarf Ban), with support from groups including Black Voices Österreich.

Austria’s new headscarf regulation came into effect on 1 September 2026 and prohibits female students under the age of 14 from wearing head coverings associated with Islamic traditions in both public and private schools. Repeated violations can lead to administrative procedures and fines ranging from €150 to €800 for parents.

Participants in the Vienna demonstration criticized the legislation, arguing that it affects religious freedom, personal choice and the rights of Muslim students. Organizers said the protest aimed to oppose what they described as discrimination against Muslim communities and to defend equal democratic rights.
