Urgent calls for action after UK hosts Sudan summit amid Darfur crisis

As the UK hosted an international summit on Sudan on Tuesday, global attention turned to the worsening humanitarian crisis in Darfur. The London conference aimed to rally international support in response to a conflict that has triggered the world’s largest displacement crisis and raised the risk of famine.

The situation in North Darfur has sharply deteriorated, especially in El Fasher and the overcrowded Zamzam camp, where around 500,000 displaced people live. Since Friday, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have reportedly killed dozens of civilians, including children, aid workers, and women volunteers.

The conflict between the RSF and Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), ongoing since April 2023, has been marked by severe atrocities—mass killings, ethnic violence, sexual slavery, and summary executions. Both sides have blocked humanitarian access, intensifying the suffering of civilians.

Concerns were also raised over continued arms supplies to both groups, with weapons reportedly sourced from countries such as the UAE and China.

Human rights groups and international observers used the summit to call on the UK and its partners to take concrete steps, including sanctions on military leaders and urgent measures to protect civilians and ensure humanitarian aid reaches those in need.
