Dutch report says anti-Muslim discrimination now systemic and worsening

The national coordinator for combating discrimination and racism in the Netherlands has issued a strong warning about the escalating and systemic nature of discrimination against Muslims in the country. Rabin Baldewsingh described the phenomenon as “normalized in all layers of society,” posing a significant threat to social cohesion. His remarks followed the release of a comprehensive research report by Utrecht University and Regioplan, commissioned by his office, which concluded that anti-Muslim discrimination is no longer isolated but a recurring and institutionalized pattern.Baldewsingh highlighted the concerning findings, stating the research, initiated in 2022, reveals a significant increase in discrimination against Muslims in recent years, emphasizing that this is not just individual bias but a clear systemic issue evident in interactions and within state and private institutions. Discrimination manifests in crucial areas such as education, the labor market, and healthcare, even extending into government bodies. The report specifically points to the heightened vulnerability of Muslim women, particularly those who wear headscarves. Baldewsingh noted the “hijab represents one of the biggest obstacles” for these women in entering the labor market, citing instances of being barred from professions like joining the police force as “clear discrimination.”Political reluctance to acknowledge the issue was also criticized by Baldewsingh, who noted the refusal of some right-wing parties in the Dutch parliament to discuss or accept the report’s conclusions. He cautioned that this denial does not negate the problem but rather allows it to worsen.Baldewsingh predicted a potentially “difficult” period ahead for the Dutch Muslim community, especially women, and urged collective societal responsibility to confront this discrimination. He called for a clear message to the government that the current situation is “completely unacceptable.” The report, based on interviews with Muslim citizens between December 2023 and December 2024, alongside a review of existing research, confirms the “systemic and widespread” nature of anti-Muslim discrimination in the Netherlands.
