Senegal opens first International Prophetic Biography Museum in sub-Saharan Africa


Senegal has inaugurated the International Museum of the Prophetic Biography and Islamic Civilization in Dakar, making it the first of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa and the third worldwide after Saudi Arabia and Morocco.

Opened on February 27 in the presence of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, the museum aims to promote a deeper understanding of Islamic civilization and the life of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him and his pure family. It is an extension of the Prophetic Biography Museum in Medina, overseen by the Muslim World League.

The museum features 35 interactive screens in six languages, providing access to 330 books and encyclopedias, primarily from Al-Azhar University. Exhibits cover the Prophet’s life, companions, and key events, with highlights including models of Mecca and Medina during his time and a 3D replica of his chamber.

According to scientific project coordinator Mohamed Saeed Ba, the initiative was inspired by former President Macky Sall, and took three years to complete. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM local time.
