Singapore detains teen over alleged attack plot inspired by Christchurch shooter

Singapore’s security authorities have detained an 18-year-old who allegedly planned an attack targeting Muslims, inspired by the 2019 Christchurch mosque shootings in New Zealand, media reports said on Monday.

According to the Internal Security Department (ISD), Nick Lee had been radicalized through far-right propaganda online and aspired to carry out a similar attack using homemade weapons.

Authorities say he engaged with like-minded individuals online and repeatedly watched footage of the Christchurch attack. He also modified a violent online game to simulate the shooting.

The ISD said Lee identified as an “East Asian supremacist” and had been issued a detention order under Singapore’s Internal Security Act in December. However, his plans remained aspirational, with no immediate timeline for an attack.

Singapore has maintained a strict approach to extremism. In recent years, authorities have detained several youths over similar plots, including a 14-year-old in 2023 and a 17-year-old earlier in 2024.
