Australian Muslims concerned over halal certification of chicken after report findings

The Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) recently released a report this month on the slaughtering process of poultry meat in Australia, sparking confusion among the Muslim community.

The report found that the controlled atmospheric stunning method, used to make chickens lose consciousness before slaughter, was not fit for halal consumption, as animals must be alive and healthy at the time of slaughter according to Islamic rulings.

The report lacked crucial detail about different stunning techniques, according to a halal certifier.

ANIC says it was only granted access to one abattoir and is engaging with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).
