Qur’an burner Salwan Momika shot dead in Sweden, local media reports
Salwan Momika, the Iraqi refugee known for burning the Holy Quran, was shot dead in his apartment in Sodertalje, Sweden, late Wednesday, news reports said, citing local media outlets.
Swedish police responded to reports of gunfire around midnight and later confirmed a man had been found shot in a residence in Hovsjo. State broadcaster SVT identified him as the 38-year-old Momika.
Authorities have launched an investigation, and one suspect has been taken into custody for questioning, police spokesperson Daniel Wikdahl said.
Momika had sparked controversy in 2023 after setting fire to copies of the Holy Quran in Stockholm. His actions led to widespread protests, and Iraq had sought his extradition.
