Senior Daesh Propaganda Suspect Arrested in Australia

Australian authorities have arrested a 65-year-old Melbourne man accused of acting as a senior propagandist for the Daesh (ISIL/ISIS) terrorist group and distributing extremist material online.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) allege that the Somali-born Australian citizen shared around 10,000 documents, images, videos, audio files and messages promoting Daesh ideology, including material depicting executions, torture and mass violence.

Police said the suspect allegedly pledged allegiance to Daesh between 2018 and 2020 and operated on behalf of the group without travelling to its former territories in the Middle East. Investigators also allege he shared material related to avoiding law enforcement and instructions linked to planning attacks.

Authorities said the case has not been connected to any specific terrorist attack or active plot and believe the accused no longer presents a threat to the public.

The man was arrested at a residence in Carlton, Melbourne, and charged with offences including membership of a terrorist organization, possession of violent extremist material and misuse of an online communication service.
