Artificial intelligence revolutionizes farming in Kashmir

Agriculture in Kashmir is undergoing a technological transformation as artificial intelligence (AI) begins to reshape farming practices, Anadolu Agency reported.

The Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning at Sheri-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology is spearheading these advancements to address key agricultural challenges.

“We are integrating AI to boost yields, detect diseases early, map weather patterns, and reduce environmental stress,” said Showkat Rasool, the center’s head. With over 70% of the region’s economy reliant on agriculture, AI-driven solutions could bring significant benefits.

Precision agriculture, using sensors, drones, and data analytics, allows farmers to apply resources like water and fertilizers more efficiently, optimizing crop yields while reducing waste. AI-powered devices such as rover sprayers with advanced sensors further minimize labor and environmental impact.

Greenhouse farming is also expanding, with over 10,500 greenhouses and polyhouses aiding cultivation in the region’s harsh winters. According to Rasool, farmers are being trained in these technologies to overcome yield challenges.
