The UN’s International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported a 27% increase in internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Sudan in 2024 compared to the previous year. By December 2024, the organization said that the number had risen to 11.5 million, up from 9.5 million in December 2023.
The IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix identified major increases in displacement in states like Gedaref, North Darfur, Blue Nile, and others, while declines were noted in Gezira and Sennar.
Sudan recorded 389 displacement incidents in 2024, with 226 caused by armed conflicts, 130 by floods, and 31 by fires. This escalation, driven by persistent conflicts and climate-related disasters, exacerbates the humanitarian crisis in the north African country.
The IOM called for urgent international intervention to provide shelter, food, and healthcare for affected populations, emphasizing the worsening conditions in Sudan as it grapples with prolonged armed conflicts and climate change impacts.
