Gunmen from Nigeria kill five Cameroonian soldiers in border attack

Gunmen from Nigeria killed at least five Cameroonian soldiers and injured several others in Bakinjaw, a village on Cameroon’s southwestern border with Nigeria, officials confirmed on Saturday.

The attack occurred early Friday when armed Fulani herdsmen reportedly crossed from Nigeria’s Taraba State into Cameroon, targeting a military post, news reports said, adding that the assault is believed to be a retaliation for the killing of several herdsmen by Cameroonian soldiers a day earlier.

In addition to the fatalities, the attackers burned down properties, including the home of a local traditional ruler. This incident is part of a series of cross-border attacks in the region, as armed groups attempt to seize territory, escalating tensions along the border.
