Milan enforces strict smoking ban in public spaces

Milan has implemented Italy’s toughest smoking ban, prohibiting smoking in all public spaces, including streets, effective January 1, France 24 reported today.

Individuals who violate the ban could face fines ranging from 40 to 240 euros ($41 to $249). The measure aims to improve air quality and protect public health, especially children, from the dangers of passive smoking.

The ban follows earlier restrictions, including smoking bans in parks, playgrounds, bus stops, and sports facilities since 2021. Milan’s air quality ordinance, passed in 2020, has progressively tightened smoking regulations in the city.

The latest ban, which applies except in isolated areas where smokers can maintain at least a 10-meter distance from others, is part of efforts to reduce harmful airborne particulates in the city’s polluted environment.

Milan’s tobacco industry is expected to see a significant drop in business, with estimates suggesting a 20-30% decrease in cigarette consumption. The ban, which excludes e-cigarettes, is part of Milan’s efforts ahead of the 2026 Winter Olympics.
