Russia’s top Islamic authority permits polygyny, Moscow’s mufti says

Russia’s top Islamic authority has issued a ruling allowing polygyny in certain circumstances, state-run RIA Novosti reported. The decision, announced by Moscow’s head Mufti Ildar Alyautdinov, permits men to marry multiple wives under religious law if specific conditions are met.

Polygyny is allowed in cases where a wife cannot or does not want to have children or in instances of health or compatibility issues. However, men must provide equal financial support, separate housing, and spend equal time with each spouse.

Alyautdinov emphasized that men must inform their current wife before entering a polygamous marriage, and women have the right to end the marriage if they object.

While Russian law prohibits polygamy, the ruling aims to address the rights of women in religious marriages, which lack legal protections. Alyautdinov said the guidance would help women take necessary steps to safeguard their rights.
