On the occasion of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, 45 human rights organizations issued a joint statement calling for accountability for those involved in crimes against journalists in Yemen.
The organizations expressed deep concern over the growing threats journalists face, stating that the current situation is unprecedented in terms of the risks to journalists’ lives rather than their protection.
The groups noted that journalists in Yemen are facing severe conditions marked by violence and intimidation, including killings, torture, and forced disappearances, amid a lack of accountability, which has fueled further violence against the press.
Reporters Without Borders highlighted that Yemen ranks 154th out of 180 countries in press freedom for 2024, describing the country as one of the most dangerous places to practice journalism.
The organizations also warned that journalists in Yemen are under increasing threat from multiple actors, urging the international community to take action to protect journalists and hold those responsible for these crimes accountable, emphasizing the need to safeguard freedom of expression and uphold journalists’ fundamental rights.
