UN Investigators Uncover Systematic Torture in Myanmar Detention Facilities
———————————–
According to an article from Anadolu Agency, independent UN investigators have found evidence of “systematic torture” within Myanmar’s detention facilities. The findings are detailed in the latest annual report from the Independent Investigative Mechanism on Myanmar (IIMM), which covers the period from July 2024 to June 2025.
Nicholas Koumjian, the head of the IIMM, stated that the team has made progress in identifying the perpetrators, including commanders who oversee these facilities. The report documents various forms of torture, including beatings, electric shocks, strangulation, gang rape, and the burning of sexual body parts.
The report also highlights a “continued increase in the frequency and brutality of atrocities” and notes that both security forces and opposition armed groups have carried out summary executions. Additionally, the IIMM has launched new investigations into atrocities committed in Rakhine state, where the military and the Arakan Army are battling for control. The team is working to gather evidence to hold the perpetrators accountable in a court of law.
