Human Rights Watch says Rohingya refugees face new risks as Bangladesh, Myanmar plan repatriation

Human Rights Watch said today that Bangladesh and Myanmar are organising return of Rohingya refugees from Bangladesh to Myanmar’s Rakhine State which can cause great risks to the lives of the refugees and their liberties.

“Bangladesh authorities shouldn’t forget the reasons why Rohingya became refugees in the first place, and recognize that none of those factors have changed,” said Shayna Bauchner, Asia researcher at Human Rights Watch.

About 60,000 Rohingya remain in Rakhine State, in terrible conditions leaving them vulnerable to extreme weather conditions.

Rohingya refugees have consistently said they want to go home, but only when their security, access to land and livelihoods, freedom of movement, and citizenship rights can be ensured.
