Rohingya Face Genocide Fears as Violence Escalates in Myanmar
A British rights group is sounding the alarm over a surge in violence against Myanmar’s Rohingya Muslim minority, Al Jazeera reported yesterday.
The Burmese Rohingya Organisation UK (BROUK) warns of an “intensifying genocide” as fighting between the military and the Arakan Army (AA) intensifies in Rakhine State.
According to the article, the conflict has trapped Rohingya civilians and disrupted vital humanitarian aid. BROUK accuses the military of depriving Rohingya of food, water, and medical care, while also forcing them to fight against the AA. The group says both the military and the AA have committed war crimes against the Rohingya.
The renewed fighting has displaced tens of thousands, with some Rohingya trapped near landmines. The UN estimates at least 45,000 have fled towards the Bangladesh border.
Adding to the crisis, the burning of a UN World Food Programme warehouse has disrupted aid deliveries, putting 64,000 people at risk of food insecurity.
