Hindu nationalists use social media platforms to incite hatred against Muslims

The Washington Post published an article highlighting religious tensions in India, the policy of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his party in exploiting the differences between the Hindu majority and the Muslim minority in the country.

The author of the article, who is the newspaper’s India Bureau Director, Gary Shea, said that ” Indian Prime Minister Narenda Modi came to power almost a decade ago . Since then, he has repeatedly mobilized voters and consolidated the power of his party by exploiting the differences between the Hindu majority and the Muslim minority.”

Shea added: “Religious tensions have existed in India since independence in 1947, and Modi’s right-wing followers in the BJP and others have turned to inflammatory rhetoric and violence against Muslims to secure support from Hindus.”

He pointed out that “The BJP and its affiliated Hindu nationalist groups have been at the global forefront of using technology to advance political goals, tightening their grip via an ideology that threatens India’s traditional secularism and religious equality; misinformation, divisive and hate-filled publications and videos are often spreading through the internet like wildfire.”
