Bangladesh Flood Death Toll Rises to 50 as Thousands Displaced
———————————————–
At least 50 people have died in Bangladesh over the past week due to severe monsoon rains that triggered widespread flooding and landslides, while tens of thousands of residents have been forced to leave their homes as rescue and relief operations continue.
Authorities said the southeastern district of Chattogram was among the worst affected areas, with 50 deaths recorded, including 29 caused by landslides. Regional official Mohammad Ziauddin said around 35,000 people have sought shelter in government evacuation centers.
The army and border guard units have been assisting relief efforts by delivering food, drinking water and essential supplies to communities isolated by floodwaters, using boats to reach affected residents.
The scale of the disaster has disrupted daily life across affected areas, with some families facing difficulties even in burying their relatives after local cemeteries were submerged. In one case, a family transported a deceased relative on a bamboo raft before holding a simple funeral on government land.
Authorities have opened around 4,000 shelters for displaced residents, although many affected communities continue to face shortages of clean water, food and basic services after homes and infrastructure were flooded.
The heavy rains also caused landslides in Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar last week, killing at least 15 people. The camps host more than 1.2 million refugees and remain highly vulnerable due to fragile infrastructure and difficult living conditions.
