Thousands of Rohingya Flee to Bangladesh Amid Escalating Violence
Approximately 8,000 Rohingya Muslims have recently fled to Bangladesh, escaping intensifying violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, Reuters reported on Wednesday citing Bangladeshi officials. The unrest has escalated due to ongoing clashes between Myanmar’s military junta and the Arakan Army, a powerful ethnic militia.
Mohammad Shamsud Douza, a senior refugee official, stated that the influx mainly occurred over the past two months. Bangladesh is already struggling to accommodate over one million Rohingya refugees living in overcrowded camps. De-facto foreign minister Mohammad Touhid Hossain expressed sympathy for the Rohingya but emphasized that the country lacks the capacity to shelter more refugees.
As the seventh anniversary of their mass exodus approaches, Rohingya in Bangladesh demand an end to violence and safe return to their homeland. They have called on the international community to exert pressure on the Arakan Army to stop its attacks, highlighting the urgent need for humanitarian support amid the worsening crisis.
