Grand Ayatollah Shirazi: Prisons and torture in some Muslim countries have no connection to Islam

The Supreme Religious Authority, Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Sadiq al-Husseini al-Shirazi, strongly condemned the practices of torture, abuse, and mistreatment occurring in some Muslim countries, stating that such acts have no relation to Islam or its teachings. He described these practices as a continuation of the oppressive legacy of the Umayyads and Abbasids.

In a statement, he said: “What we witness today in some Islamic countries—unfortunately—of prisons, torture, and abuse, is not from Islam, not from the Qur’an, and not from the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family).” His Eminence emphasized that the nature of current prison systems and their practices reflect unjust regimes that distorted Islam by committing atrocities in its name.

Grand Ayatollah Shirazi urged Muslim governments to follow the examples of Prophet Muhammad and Imam Ali, whose rule embodied justice, mercy, and fairness, stressing the need to move away from oppressive policies and uphold the true image of Islam through just governance.
