At least 60 people have been killed, 231 injured and 1,700 houses set on fire in the violence in Manipur state, officials said.
In the course of the violence, angry mobs attacked houses, cars and places of worship.
It is reported that around 10,000 people have been displaced due to the unrest.
While military forces have been sent to the region to restore order, internet has been suspended and curfew is in place in the region.
