Saudi Arabia Executes Five Men from Eastern Province Amid Rights Concerns
———————————–
Saudi Arabia announced on Saturday, October 17, 2026, that it had executed five men from the Eastern Province over charges related to terrorism, renewing concerns among human rights advocates about the kingdom’s continued use of the death penalty in security-related cases.

In a statement, the Saudi Interior Ministry identified the men as Mohammed bin Munir bin Mohammed Al-Zaher, Ali bin Abd Rabb Al-Hussein Al-Sheikh, Hassan bin Zaki bin Mohammed Al-Faraj, Reda bin Mohammed bin Ali Al Abu Abdullah, and Ali bin Hassan bin Ahmed Al-Rabah. The ministry said the sentences were carried out as discretionary death penalties.

According to the ministry, the men were accused of joining a terrorist organization abroad, shooting at security personnel and facilities with intent to kill, possessing firearms and live ammunition, and providing financial support for operations described as terrorist acts inside the kingdom.

The executions come amid ongoing human rights concerns over Saudi Arabia’s use of capital punishment, particularly in cases involving security and political allegations. Rights groups have raised concerns about the potential use of counterterrorism laws against dissent and have questioned whether defendants receive adequate fair-trial guarantees, including access to independent legal counsel.

Advocates continue to call for greater transparency in judicial proceedings and compliance with international fair-trial standards.
