UNAMA condemns physical punishment by Taliban in Afghanistan
The US-based news agency the “Jurist” has published a new report on the use of corporal punishment and death sentences by the Taliban in Afghanistan.
The report, released on Monday 8th May, said that the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) had confirmed the use of physical punishment by the ruling Taliban in the country.
According to the UN, the Taliban have imposed lashings and other beatings, amputations and executions by shooting, beheading and hanging between 2010-2021, before returning to power.
UNAMA, in a report released in July 2022, said that between 14th-15th August, 17 individuals were executed in Kandahar, and on 22nd of February, an ALP (Afghan Local Police) officer was found shot after being arrested de the “de facto authorities.
The humanitarian situation in Afghanistan is declining amid more restrictions on women, preventing them from work and education.
