Iraq in 2100: The most populated country in the region and the first Shia country
The American Washington Institute shed light on reading the repercussions on the Middle East, based on a recent United Nations study on population projections in the world.
The American Institute believed, in a report, that “Iraq will enhance its strategic importance, because it will become one of the largest countries in the region by population, and it will also become the largest Shia country in the world, instead of Iran, in front of the decline in the population of both Turkey and Iran.”
The Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations recently issued the “World Population Prospects Report and the expected changes by the year 2100”, during which it referred to the demographic facts and assumed power relations, and the possibilities of their change, including in the Middle East.
On the other hand, the population is expected to skyrocket in two medium-sized countries, Iraq and Yemen – which will increase their geostrategic importance, as the population of Iraq will increase from 44 million to 112 million.
