The United Nations announced that 175 people have been killed in Myanmar, while being arbitrarily detained by the army, since the military coup took place in early February.
This came in a press conference held by Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, at the permanent headquarters of the international organization in New York.
“The United Nations is deeply concerned about the increase in arbitrary arrests in Myanmar,” Dujarric said.
He added, “Reliable reports indicate that at least 175 people have died in custody since last February.”
Regarding the details of the deaths, he continued, “This includes 50 deaths in custody that have been reported since the beginning of October alone, and many of the bodies showed signs of ill-treatment or torture.”
He continued, “We reiterate our call for the release of all detainees and an end to the violence.”
In early February, Myanmar army leaders carried out a military coup, followed by the arrest of senior leaders in the country.
