ICJ to Deliver Landmark Judgment on Myanmar’s Alleged Genocide Against Rohingya Muslims on November 19

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is scheduled to deliver its judgment on November 19 in a landmark case filed by The Gambia against Myanmar over alleged violations of the 1948 Genocide Convention against the Rohingya Muslim minority.

The ruling will be announced by ICJ President Judge Iwasawa Yuji during a public hearing at the Peace Palace in The Hague at 10 a.m. local time.

The Gambia initiated the case in November 2019, accusing Myanmar of violating its international obligations through acts of genocide against the Rohingya. In January 2020, the court ordered Myanmar to take provisional measures to prevent genocidal acts and preserve evidence. It subsequently rejected Myanmar’s objections to its jurisdiction in July 2022, allowing proceedings to continue. Public hearings on the merits took place from January 12 to 29, 2026, with 11 countries intervening in the proceedings.

The case concerns atrocities committed against the predominantly Muslim Rohingya population, particularly during the 2017 military crackdown, which forced more than 700,000 people to flee to Bangladesh. The United Nations has documented allegations of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes, while the United States formally determined in March 2022 that Myanmar’s military had committed genocide and crimes against humanity against the community.
