Egyptian-American physician and Democratic politician Abdul El-Sayed has defeated Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan’s Senate election, becoming the first Muslim elected to the US Senate.
His victory on November 4, marks a historic milestone for Muslim representation in American politics, following a campaign marked by repeated Islamophobic attacks, including accusations from President Donald Trump, who labelled El-Sayed a “jihadist.”
El-Sayed also faced opposition from within his own party after former primary rival Haley Stevens endorsed Rogers.
In his victory speech, El-Sayed called for greater accountability in government spending, arguing that public funds should prioritize healthcare, education and American families rather than overseas wars.
His election represents a significant development for Muslim political representation and the progressive movement in the United States.
