Italy: Initiative to Teach Students About Islam Sparks Debate Within Catholic Church
——————————
An educational initiative launched in Rome to introduce students to Islam and challenge stereotypes has sparked controversy within Catholic circles, following the announcement of support from Cardinal Matteo Maria Zuppi, president of the Italian Bishops’ Conference. The project aims to promote mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence among followers of different religions.
Titled Learning About Islam, the initiative brings together Muslim and Christian researchers to provide schools with educational materials covering Islamic history, beliefs, the Quran and Muslim communities. Its organisers say the resources are intended to correct misconceptions and encourage interfaith dialogue.
Cardinal Zuppi said that learning about other religions is an important step towards building more understanding and tolerant societies. He also stressed that knowledge can help counter Islamophobia and reduce prejudice affecting relations between religious communities.
However, Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò strongly criticised the initiative and Zuppi’s support for it. He warned Muslims against trusting the cardinal’s positions and accused him of weakening Catholic teachings through his approach to interreligious dialogue.
