UN: 33.7 Million People in Sudan Need Humanitarian Assistance as Crisis Deepens

The United Nations has warned that Sudan’s humanitarian crisis continues to worsen, with approximately 33.7 million people in need of urgent assistance. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) described the situation as one of the world’s most severe humanitarian emergencies.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, OCHA said the number of people requiring aid had reached an unprecedented level. Based on unofficial population estimates of around 53 million, more than 63 percent of Sudan’s population now needs some form of humanitarian support.
The UN agency called for an intensified international response and appealed for $2.9 billion to provide life-saving assistance across the country. The crisis has escalated amid the war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, which began in April 2023 and has caused widespread displacement, economic hardship and the deterioration of essential services.
