Texas Muslims Increase Political Engagement Amid Concerns Over Islamophobia, Religious Discrimination

Muslim communities across Texas are increasing their political and civic engagement ahead of the US midterm elections scheduled for November 3, amid growing concerns about anti-Muslim rhetoric, religious discrimination, and the representation of Islam in public school curricula.

In Frisco, the Islamic Center organized an event titled “Barbecue and Ballot Box” to encourage members of the Muslim community to participate in early voting and become more involved in the electoral process. Organizers aimed to provide an opportunity for Muslim voters to raise concerns affecting their communities and make their voices heard in public affairs.

The mobilization comes amid growing political controversy in Texas over issues involving Muslims. These include Governor Greg Abbott’s designation of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) as a terrorist organization, Republican proposals to prohibit the application of Islamic law, and school curricula that critics say portray Islam inaccurately.

Muslim voter Sarah Israr expressed concern about these developments, saying she voted for most Democratic candidates in response to controversial educational materials. She added that the current climate had made her daughter increasingly hesitant to openly express her religious identity.

Nauman Shafii said anti-Muslim rhetoric had prompted some voters who traditionally supported Republicans to reconsider their political positions, reflecting concerns about the potential impact of such rhetoric on Muslim communities.

A volunteer working with Democratic candidate James Talarico’s campaign also said Islamophobia had become more noticeable during the year. The volunteer expressed hope that increased Muslim participation in elections would encourage politicians to address the community’s concerns and demands.

Texas is also witnessing a closely watched US Senate contest involving Democratic candidate James Talarico and Republican candidate Ken Paxton. The race has become part of a broader political debate over representation, religious freedom, and the treatment of minority communities.
