Malaysian police have arrested a 38-year-old man suspected of desecrating and vandalizing a mosque in Tumpat, Kelantan, after prayer carpets were found contaminated with foul-smelling muddy water mixed with bone fragments and fur.
According to Malaysian newspaper Sinar Harian, the incident occurred on October 5 at Masjid Azizul Hadi, in the Kota S.P.P. Warisan area. The damage was discovered on the mosque’s prayer carpets, prompting security authorities to launch an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Tumpat police chief Khairi Shafie said the suspect, who works as a driver, had been detained and placed in police custody for four days to facilitate further investigations and the collection of evidence.
The case is being investigated under Sections 295 and 427 of Malaysia’s Penal Code, which concern the desecration of places of worship and the commission of property damage, respectively.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to establish the full circumstances of the incident and determine the motive behind the alleged act.
