Shi’a Muslim communities across the world are celebrating the birth anniversary of Lady Zainab bint Ali, with religious gatherings, poetry recitals and cultural programmes held at holy shrines in Karbala and Samarra, alongside events organized by religious institutions in several countries.

Shi’a Muslims are marking the birth anniversary of Lady Zainab al-Kubra, granddaughter of the Holy Prophet and daughter of Imam Ali and Lady Fatima (peace be upon them), on the fifth of Jumada al-Awwal, with celebrations highlighting her life, courage and enduring role in preserving the message of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) and Karbala.

According to Shia Waves Agency, festive gatherings have taken place in holy cities, husseiniyas, mosques and religious centres in different parts of the world. Participants have commemorated the occasion through devotional programmes, religious speeches, poetry and praise recitals celebrating Lady Zainab’s steadfastness and her role in defending the principles of the Islamic message.

In Karbala, a large religious celebration was held near the Qibla Gate of the shrine of Abu al-Fadl al-Abbas, drawing local residents, pilgrims and religious, official and social figures. The event was organized by the Abbasid Holy Shrine as part of its annual programme commemorating the occasions associated with the Ahl al-Bayt.

The ceremony opened with a recitation from the Holy Quran, followed by an address from Sheikh Ali Mouhan, head of the shrine’s Religious Affairs Department. He extended congratulations to the Muslim community and reflected on Lady Zainab’s life, particularly her support for her brother, Imam Hussein, during the events of Karbala.

The address highlighted her patience and resilience during the tragedy of Ashura and her role in carrying forward the message of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) after his martyrdom. The programme also featured classical and popular poetry, along with praise recitals celebrating her virtues and historical legacy.

In Samarra, the Askari Holy Shrine hosted a religious gathering in the courtyard of the shrine of Imams Ali al-Hadi and Hasan al-Askari. Organized in cooperation with residents of Qazaniyah, the event brought participants together to commemorate Lady Zainab’s birth and renew their connection with the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt.

Centres and institutions affiliated with Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Sadiq al-Husseini al-Shirazi in Iraq, Iran, Syria and other countries have also announced religious and cultural programmes for the occasion. These include lectures and educational activities examining Lady Zainab’s life, her defence of Islamic values and her contribution to transmitting the message of Imam Hussein to later generations.
