Yemen: 43 Civilian Violations Reported in Taiz in 24 Hours as Displacement Surges

The Yemeni Network for Rights and Freedoms has documented 43 alleged violations against civilians in Taiz governorate within 24 hours, including the deaths of five civilians and injuries to 17 others, as renewed fighting and restrictions on key roads deepen Yemen’s humanitarian crisis.
In a report issued on October 13, the network said the incidents included shelling of residential neighbourhoods, attacks on homes and private vehicles, and damage to health facilities and places of worship. It reported that more than 180 projectiles were fired towards residential areas. The allegations were also reported by Yemen’s state news agency, Saba. Source
The network said the five fatalities included a five-year-old girl killed inside her family’s home in Haisban, in Al-Misrakh district. The injured included women, children and older people. The reported damage included seven homes, 12 private vehicles, Al-Safwa Hospital and Al-Saeed Mosque.
The escalation has compounded shortages of food, water, fuel and medicines, while road closures have restricted civilian movement and disrupted commercial supplies and humanitarian access. Rising prices are placing additional pressure on low-income families and people requiring medical care.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned on October 12 that continued hostilities and large-scale displacement were increasing humanitarian needs, particularly in Taiz. It said restrictions on key roads were disrupting civilian travel, commercial deliveries and relief operations. UN humanitarian partners had reached approximately 143,000 people with emergency assistance, but access constraints, limited resources and ongoing fighting were hampering the response. Source
Updated figures from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) show the scale of the displacement. In an update covering developments through October 13, IOM recorded approximately 227,683 people displaced between August 1 and October 13 because of the escalation along Yemen’s western coast and southern frontlines. Taiz governorate was hosting 121,104 displaced people, the largest share among the affected governorates. Source
Further reporting on October 14 said fighting had disrupted humanitarian assistance to approximately 800,000 people across Yemen, while hospitals were struggling with rising casualties and shortages of essential medical supplies. Reuters report
The latest developments point to a deteriorating security situation in and around Taiz, where control of supply routes has become a central issue in the renewed fighting. Continued restrictions threaten access to food, drinking water, fuel and healthcare, while displacement is placing additional pressure on already limited shelter and relief resources.
