India: AIMIM Plans to Contest 200 Seats in Uttar Pradesh After Opposition Alliance Rejects Proposal

The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), led by Asaduddin Owaisi, plans to field candidates in approximately 200 constituencies in Uttar Pradesh in the 2027 state assembly elections after its proposal to join the opposition alliance was rejected.

Owaisi had sought to join the alliance involving the Samajwadi Party and the Congress to challenge the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and prevent the division of Muslim votes. However, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav rejected the proposal, prompting AIMIM to consider contesting independently.

According to Deccan Herald, the party intends to focus on constituencies with significant Muslim populations, particularly in Saharanpur, Rampur, Moradabad, and parts of western and central Uttar Pradesh.

Speaking at an election rally in Azamgarh, Owaisi criticized the BJP and accused the Samajwadi Party of relying on Muslim voters without ensuring equal rights and fair political representation. He called for greater independent political participation by Muslims and stronger representation of their interests.

The party is preparing a broader campaign across the state, although Owaisi has not confirmed whether he will personally contest the elections or identified a constituency.

The move adds another dimension to preparations for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, with AIMIM’s planned participation potentially affecting electoral competition among the BJP and opposition parties.
