Sweden Arrests Suspect Over 2022 Quran-Burning Riots More Than Four Years Later

Swedish police have arrested a 25-year-old man in Värmland County suspected of participating in the riots that erupted in Örebro and other Swedish cities during Easter 2022, following plans by Danish far-right politician Rasmus Paludan to burn copies of the Holy Quran.

According to Swedish police, the man was arrested during a search operation last Saturday. He had been wanted since March 2024 on suspicion of aggravated obstruction of police and emergency services during violent clashes in Sveaparken park in Örebro. Investigators believe he was living outside Sweden before his arrest, but have not disclosed further details.

Police said 17 other suspects remain wanted under outstanding arrest warrants in connection with the unrest. The riots followed protests against Paludan’s planned Quran-burning events, which sparked widespread anger among Muslims and led to confrontations with police and emergency personnel.

The ongoing investigations have renewed debate in Sweden over religious desecration, freedom of expression and the authorities’ responsibility to maintain public safety during demonstrations.
