Afghans in Germany Protest Taliban Restrictions on Shia Religious, Educational Institutions

Dozens of Afghans living in Germany, along with civil society activists from Muslim communities and German citizens, held a protest in Berlin against what they described as increasing religious repression and restrictions on Shia educational institutions in Afghanistan.

The demonstrators gathered outside Berlin Cathedral and marched toward Gendarmenmarkt, calling on the international community to address alleged human rights violations, severe restrictions on women’s education, and growing limitations on religious freedoms for minorities in Afghanistan.

According to Deutsche Welle, the protest was organized in response to recent actions by the Taliban authorities, including the reported blockade, evacuation, and closure of the Khatam al-Nabiyyin Islamic university and seminary in Kabul, as well as the detention of some Shia activists.

Participants said the measures posed a serious threat to the social and religious life of Afghanistan’s Shia community. They urged Western governments and international organizations to reconsider political engagement with the Taliban and make respect for religious rights and an end to discriminatory practices conditions for any future dialogue.
