Ethiopian President Highlights Role of Religious Institutions in Promoting Peace and Coexistence

Ethiopian President Taye Atske Selassie has praised the role of religious institutions in strengthening coexistence, cooperation, and peace across the country, urging religious leaders to oppose efforts aimed at creating division and social tensions.

The president made the remarks during the 15th anniversary celebration of the Ethiopian Council of Religious Institutions, held alongside its 18th General Assembly in Addis Ababa, with the participation of government officials, religious leaders, and diplomats.

Atske Selassie said religious institutions have made significant contributions to promoting harmony among Ethiopia’s diverse communities. He called on religious leaders to use their influence to bridge social divides and support dialogue among different groups.

Ethiopian Minister of Peace Mohammed Idris also commended religious institutions for their role in peacebuilding over the past years, including their participation in national dialogue efforts and initiatives addressing social challenges.

Officials from the Ethiopian Council of Religious Institutions emphasized that religious leaders have contributed to conflict prevention, development efforts, and strengthening relations among various ethnic and religious communities.

The assembly reviewed the council’s activities in promoting peace, development, and coexistence, while discussing ways to expand cooperation among religious institutions. The meeting highlighted the importance of using Ethiopia’s religious and cultural diversity as a foundation for unity rather than division.
