New Freedom Flotilla Mission Sets Sail for Gaza

The Freedom Flotilla Coalition has launched a new international maritime mission seeking to reach Gaza in October and challenge Israel’s blockade, despite the risks faced by activists on previous voyages.
The coalition said two vessels have already begun the journey. The Handala II sailed through Scandinavia during June and July, stopping in Norway, Sweden and Denmark, while the Kate departed Bristol earlier this month and has since visited ports in Ireland, Germany and France. Planned stops include Spain, Portugal and Italy before the vessels continue toward Gaza.
The mission brings together human rights advocates, peace activists, journalists, medical professionals, elected representatives and supporters of Palestinian rights. Organizers are calling on governments to guarantee the flotilla’s safe passage, pressure Israel to allow food, water and medicine into Gaza, and impose diplomatic consequences if the vessels are attacked or seized.
The coalition says the mission is necessary despite the dangers, citing previous interceptions of Gaza-bound flotillas by Israeli forces. It also alleges that activists detained after earlier interceptions were subjected to mistreatment. Amnesty International has reported alleged sleep deprivation and denial of water and medical care among some detainees.
The new flotilla comes amid continuing humanitarian concerns in Gaza. According to UNICEF figures cited by Al Jazeera, more than 82 percent of families remain water insecure, while around 90 percent of water and sanitation infrastructure has been destroyed.
The Freedom Flotilla Coalition traces its activities to the Free Gaza Movement’s voyages in 2008 and the 2010 Mavi Marmara incident, when 10 activists were killed during an Israeli military operation against a flotilla attempting to reach Gaza.
