Members of Iraq’s Yazidi community are preparing to commemorate the annual anniversary of the genocide they suffered in 2014, as calls continue for determining the fate of thousands of missing people and addressing the humanitarian and social consequences of the tragedy.

Commemorative events are being held in Yazidi areas and displacement camps, including photo exhibitions, documentation seminars, and awareness activities aimed at honoring the victims and highlighting the ongoing suffering of families still searching for relatives who disappeared more than a decade ago.

Yazidi activists and community representatives have stressed the need to continue national and international efforts to locate missing persons, support the return of displaced families to their original areas, and accelerate reconstruction programs and the restoration of essential services in affected regions.

According to official and humanitarian reports, thousands of Yazidis were abducted after the Islamic State (ISIS) group launched its assault on Yazidi-majority areas in 2014. While many victims were later rescued through government and humanitarian efforts, the fate of thousands remains unknown.

Specialized teams continue searching and documenting mass grave sites discovered in affected areas, working to identify victims and preserve evidence of crimes committed against the Yazidi community.

Human rights and humanitarian experts say the issues of missing persons and displacement remain among the greatest challenges facing Yazidis. They have called for stronger government and international action to ensure justice for victims and their families, preserve collective memory, and prevent similar atrocities in the future.
