Grand Ayatollah Shirazi: Best Deeds During Arbaeen Walk Are Observing Obligations, Avoiding Prohibitions

Grand Ayatollah Sayyed Sadeq al-Husseini al-Shirazi held his daily scholarly session on Tuesday, 29 Muharram 1448, where he answered questions from attendees on various jurisprudential matters.
During the session, His Eminence addressed the best practices for pilgrims participating in the Arbaeen Walk, stating that the greatest acts of worship during this period are fulfilling religious obligations and refraining from prohibited actions. He added that one of these obligations is enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong.
The supreme religious authority explained that enjoining good and preventing evil is a collective obligation (wajib kifa’i), but if there are not enough people fulfilling this duty, it becomes an individual obligation (wajib ‘ayni) upon those capable of carrying it out.
The Marja further noted that many participants in the Arbaeen pilgrimage may lack sufficient knowledge of religious rulings, while there may not be enough individuals available to help educate them. Therefore, he said, this collective obligation can become an individual responsibility.
He concluded by emphasizing that one of the best deeds during the Arbaeen Walk is for individuals to share their knowledge of religious teachings with others to the extent of their own understanding and ability.
