Shia Rights Organization Stresses Protection of Religious Freedoms During Muharram 2026

Shia Rights Watch has renewed its call for upholding human dignity, justice, and freedom of religion and belief as Muslims around the world mark the holy month of Muharram in 2026.
In a statement received by Shia Waves Agency, the organization said Muharram is not only a time of mourning and remembrance of the tragedy of Karbala, but also a global occasion to reflect on the stand of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him, against oppression and tyranny, and his defense of human rights and dignity.
The organization emphasized that the message of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him, transcends geographic, religious, and sectarian boundaries, carrying universal values that call for supporting truth, resisting injustice, and protecting human dignity.
It stressed that the right to practice religious rituals, express beliefs, and commemorate religious occasions is a fundamental right that must be legally protected for all citizens without discrimination.
The organization also expressed concern over continued restrictions and harassment faced by some Shia communities in several countries during Muharram, warning that such measures contradict international human rights principles and weaken social cohesion and trust between citizens and state institutions.
It called on governments, officials, and decision-makers to enable all religious groups to practice their rituals and observe their occasions peacefully and safely, free from discrimination, intimidation, or restrictions.
The organization further urged international institutions, civil society groups, and human rights bodies to continue monitoring and documenting violations related to freedom of belief and religious expression, and to address them through internationally recognized legal and human rights frameworks.
The statement concluded by affirming that Karbala remains a global symbol of resistance against injustice and a defense of human values, adding that protecting religious freedoms is essential to strengthening justice, equality, and respect for religious and cultural diversity.
