Spain: FIFA Sanctions Football Federation Over Anti-Muslim Chants
———————————–
FIFA has fined the Spanish Football Federation $20,000 and ordered the partial closure of stadium stands for Spain’s next home friendly following anti-Muslim chants by some supporters during a match against Egypt on March 31 in Barcelona.

The sanctions require at least 15% of available seats, particularly behind the goals, to be closed. With FIFA’s approval, the affected areas may instead host community groups, anti-discrimination organizations, families and students as part of awareness initiatives.

FIFA rejected the Spanish federation’s argument that the word “Muslim” was not inherently discriminatory, stressing that language used to mock or insult religious identity can constitute discrimination.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente and player Lamine Yamal condemned the chants, while the Egyptian Football Association described them as racist. FIFA said the stadium restriction applies only to Spain’s next home friendly.
