Magnitude 6.7 Earthquake Hits Indonesia’s Sulawesi Island

A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck Indonesia’s Sulawesi island on Tuesday, causing panic among residents and triggering a series of aftershocks near the city of Palu in Central Sulawesi.
The quake was centered about 43 kilometers east-southeast of Palu at a shallow depth of around 10 kilometers, increasing the strength of surface shaking in nearby areas.
Residents in affected communities reported strong tremors lasting for more than a minute, prompting many people to flee homes, offices and public buildings for open areas.
Indonesian authorities said there was no tsunami threat following the earthquake. However, emergency officials reported casualties, injuries and damage to homes, public facilities and infrastructure as assessment teams continued to inspect affected districts.
The quake was followed by dozens of aftershocks, keeping residents on alert in an area still marked by memories of the devastating 2018 Palu earthquake and tsunami.
Indonesia lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world’s most active seismic and volcanic zones, where earthquakes are frequent due to the movement of several tectonic plates.
