Illinois Mosque Opens Doors to Help Public Learn About Islam

A mosque in suburban Illinois opened its doors to the public on Saturday as part of an effort to counter misconceptions about Islam and build stronger ties with the wider community.

The Islamic Society of Northwest Suburbs welcomed visitors from different faiths and backgrounds to learn directly from Muslim community members about Islamic beliefs, worship and daily practices.

Organizers said the open house aimed to replace ignorance with understanding through direct conversation and community engagement. Guests toured the mosque, received educational materials, including copies of the Quran, and took part in cultural activities such as henna art and Arabic calligraphy.

Several non-Muslim visitors said it was their first time entering a mosque and described the experience as informative and welcoming.

The event was held amid continuing concerns over anti-Muslim prejudice in the United States, including the 2023 killing of six-year-old Wadee Alfayoumi in Illinois, a case prosecutors said was motivated by anti-Muslim hate.

Organizers and attendees said the gathering showed the importance of dialogue, shared understanding and recognizing common values across communities.
